States of Data
States
- Data at Rest: Data stored on a storage device, such as hard drives, SSDs, or databases, not actively being transmitted or processed.
- Data in Transit: Data being transmitted over a network, such as through the internet or private networks, typically between devices or systems.
- Data in Use: Data currently being accessed or processed by the system, typically in memory (RAM) or by the CPU during active computation or manipulation.
Data Sovereignty
Data that resides within a country's borders is subject to that country's laws and regulations regarding data privacy and security.
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) states that data collected from individuals in the European Union must remain within the EU or comply with strict regulations when transferred outside.
This can affect the legality of moving data across international borders, especially where data privacy laws differ.
Geolocation
Geolocation refers to determining a user's physical location using methods such as GPS, Wi-Fi (802.11), mobile network providers, etc.
Levels of data control, privacy enforcement, and legal compliance can be based on the user's location or jurisdiction.
